What is Titanium carbide?
Chemical properties
Extremely hard, crystalline solid with gray metallic color. Resistivity 60 μΩ?cm (room temperature). Insoluble in water; soluble in nitric acid and aqua regia.
Physical properties
Gray crystals. Superconducting at 1.1 K. Soluble in HNO and 3 aqua regia. Resistant to oxidation in air up to 450°C. Maximum operating temperature 3000°C in helium. Crucible container for handling molten metals such as Na, Bi, Zn, Pb, Sn, Bi, Rb, and Cd. Corroded by liquid metals Mg, Al, Si, Ti, Zr, V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo, Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni. Attacked by molten NaOH.
The Uses of Titanium carbide
Titanium carbide is used in the manufacture of wear-resistant tools, cutting tools, As a coating for abrasive steel bearings, In the form of nano titanium carbide ceramic in optics applications, Enhance the conductivity of materials and as a nucleating agent.
The Uses of Titanium carbide
Additive (with tungsten carbide) in making cutting tools and other parts subjected to thermal shock, arc-melting electrodes, cermets, coating dies for metal extrusion (0.2 mil film by vapor deposition).
The Uses of Titanium carbide
Titanium (IV) carbide (TiC) is used as an additive to carbide to make high-temperature cutting tools, cements, abrasives, and coatings.
Flammability and Explosibility
Non flammable
Industrial uses
Titanium carbide in a molybdenum and nickelmatrix is formulated for high-temperature service.Tensile and compressive strengths, hardness, and oxidation resistance are high at1093°C. Critical parts for welding and thermalmetalworking tools, valves, seals, and hightemperaturegauging equipment are made fromgrades of this RHM.
