Chemical properties
white to yellow-beige crystals, crystalline. 1,2-Phenylenediacetonitrile [613-73- 0], 1,2-bis-(cyanomethyl)benzene, Mr 156.18; mp 59 – 60℃; forms colorless crystals. The nitrile is used as an intermediate for the synthesis of optical brighteners and is produced by the reaction of 1,2-bis(chloromethyl)benzene with sodium cyanide in aqueous suspension under phase transfer catalysis.
