What is Propacetamol?
Description
Propacetamol is the prodrug of paracetamol (acetaminophen), used for intravenous administration. It results from eombination of paracetamol and diethylglycine. Causes contact dermatitis and airborne dermatitis in nurses. Allergenic properties are due to the N,N' -diethylglycine moiety, and not to the paracetamol moiety.
The Uses of Propacetamol
Propacetamol hydrochloride is a water-soluble prodrug for intravenous administration resulting in the liberation of paracetamol.
Definition
ChEBI: Propacetamol is an alpha-amino acid ester.
Contact allergens
Propacetamol is a prodrug of paracetamol (acetaminophen) used for intravenous administration. It results from the combination of paracetamol and diethylglycine. It caused contact (hand and airborne) dermatitis in nurses and acute systemic dermatitis (pompholyx and nummular dermatitis, generalized eczema, urticaria-like eruption) in nurses who had became sick and received intravenous propacetamol. Allergenic properties are due to the N,N-diethylglycine moiety, and not to the paracetamol moiety. Propacetamol is now substituted by a solution of paracetamol in mannitol (Perfalgan?).
Mechanism of action
It is a soluble glycine prodrug derivative of paracetamol. It is used as hydrochloride, for intramuscular or intravenous application and is rapidly metabolized to free paracetamol .
