What is Piroctone olamine?
The Uses of Piroctone olamine
Piroctone olamine is used in combination with other substances as a part of shampoo effectively reduced the amount of dandruff and, at the same time, provided hair conditioning advantages. Recently was shown, that piroctone olamine could induce apoptosis and possessed a significant in vivo effect against myeloma.
The Uses of Piroctone olamine
Piroctone Olamine is an anti-dandruff agent used in shampoo formulations.
Definition
ChEBI: An organoammonium salt that is the ethanolamine salt of piroctone.
brand name
Octopirox (Hoechst AG, Germany).
Mechanism of action
Piroctone olamine, also known as Octopirox, is an antifungal and antibacterial agent commonly used in cosmetic and personal care products, such as shampoos, conditioners, and lotions. It works by inhibiting the growth of various microorganisms, including yeasts and fungi, by disrupting their cell membranes and interfering with their metabolism. Specifically, piroctone olamine targets the enzymes responsible for synthesizing the cell membrane of microorganisms, inhibiting their growth and causing their eventual death. It also has anti-inflammatory properties that help to reduce redness and itching on the scalp and skin.
Side Effects
It should be kept in mind that shampoos with Piroctone Olamine should not be used more than twice a week, unlike other daily-use shampoos that don't have this ingredient. One of the biggest side effects of Piroctone Olamine is that it can cause irritation and itchiness on the head.
Solubility
Piroctone Olamine's good solubility makes the active ingredient especially suitable for the formulation of clear products. This is of potential significance to the anti-dandruff shampoo segment, where most take the form of white viscous liquids. This is due in part to the difficulty in formulating a transparent shampoo because of the large particles and white appearance of the Zinc Pyrithione, the most common anti-dandruff agent.
Relieve Dandruff
The
fungus Malassezia globosa occurs naturally on the scalp, but some people are
sensitive to the chemicals it produces. The skin becomes irritated, and
the body reacts by rapidly shedding skin to try and get rid of the
irritant, causing flaking. Piroctone olamine can help relieve dandruff due to its anti-fungal properties.
