What is Limonin?
Chemical properties
White powder
The Uses of Limonin
Limonin is a limonoid extracted from various citrus plants. Bioactivity of Limonin have been revolved around its anti-HIV properties.
The Uses of Limonin
antiproliferative, antiviral, antiinflammatory, antinociceptive
The Uses of Limonin
Limonin has been used:
- to treat human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) to test its effect on human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) replication
- to test its effects as an anti-osteoporosis agent in osteoblastogenesis activity in MC3T3-E1 cells and ovariectomized (OVX) rat model
- as a reference standard in high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) system
What are the applications of Application
Limonin is a chemically induced carcinogenesis inhibitor
Definition
ChEBI: Limonin is a limonoid, an epoxide, a hexacyclic triterpenoid, a member of furans, an organic heterohexacyclic compound and a lactone. It has a role as a metabolite, an inhibitor and a volatile oil component.
General Description
Limonin is a limonoid glycoside with cancer chemo-preventive activity.
Biochem/physiol Actions
Limonin is a triterpenoid aglycone that is a bitter principle of citrus fruits. It has anti-proliferative, proapoptotic activity on several cancer cell lines and inhibits azoxymethane-induced colon cancer in rats. It also inhibits HIV-1 replication in culturedf monocytes, macrophages, and mononuclear cells, perhaps by inhibition of HIV-1 protease activity.
