The Uses of Halazone
Water disinfectant.
Manufacturing Process
20 kg p-aminosulfonyl benzoic acid was mixed with 400 L 0.5 N NaOCl. After an acidification with 100 L 1 N acetic acid, a precipitate dropped out. It was filtered off, washed and dried. The obtained 4-((dichloroamino)sulfonyl) benzoic acid had MP: 203°C.
Therapeutic Function
Antiseptic, Antiseptic
General Description
Fine white powder with an odor of chlorine.
General Description
p-Dichlorosulfamoylbenzoic acid is a white, crystalline, photosensitive compound with a faint chlorine odor.Halazone is only slightly soluble in water at pH 7 but becomesvery soluble in alkaline solutions. The sodium salt ofhalazone is used to disinfect drinking water.
Air & Water Reactions
Insoluble in water.
