Chemical properties
Chlorhexidine Hydrochloride occurs as awhite, crystalline powder. It is odorless, and has a bittertaste. It is soluble in formic acid, slightly soluble in methanoland in warm methanol, and practically insoluble in water , in ethanol and in diethyl ether. It is gradually colored by light.
Mechanism of action
Chlorhexidine hydrochloride has both bactericidal and bacteriostatic mechanisms of action, the mechanism of action being membrane disruption, not ATPase inactivation as previously thought. It is also useful against fungi and enveloped viruses, though this has not been extensively investigated.
