Oxiconazole Structural

What is Oxiconazole?

Absorption

Systemic absorption of oxiconazole is low.

Toxicity

Side effects incliude pruritus, burning, irritation, erythema, stinging and allergic contact dermatitis and folliculitis, fissuring, maceration rash and nodules.

Description

Oxiconazole is a substituted imidazole derivative,it is structurally distinct from miconazole, econazole, clotrimazole, and ketoconazole because it is an acetophene-oxime derivative. It has a broad spectrum of antifungal activity including activity against yeasts, dermatophytes, and Aspergillus species.

The Uses of Oxiconazole

Antifungal.
Oxiconazole (Oxistat) is a synthetic imidazole that works, in part, by inhibiting ergosterol 2,3-epoxidase synthesis and thereby disrupting cell membrane integrity.

The Uses of Oxiconazole

Oxiconazole is used as an antifungal agent.

Indications

For treatment of dermal fungal infection.

Background

Oxiconazole is an antifungal agent that is commonly found in topical formulations. It is marketed under the brand names Oxistat and Oxistat, and is used in the treatment of various skin infections such as athlete's foot, jock itch and ringworm.

What are the applications of Application

Oxiconazole is used as an antifungal agent

Definition

ChEBI: An oxime O-ether that is the 2,4-dichlorobenzyl ether of the oxime obtained by formal condensation of hydroxylamine with the carbonyl group of acetopnenone in which the phenyl group is substituted by chlorines at positions 2 and 4, and i which one of the hydrogens of the methyl group is replaced by a 1H-imidazol-1-yl group. An antifungal agent, it is used (generally as the nitrate salt) in creams and powders for the topical treatment of fungal skin infections.

Indications

Topical treatment of mycoses of the skin induced or sustained by fungi such as dermatophytes and yeasts. In addition, oxiconazole is indicated for therapy of vulvovaginal mycoses caused by Candida species and Candida (Torulopsis) glabrata.

brand name

Oxistat (Altana).

Antimicrobial activity

Broad-specktrum imidazole antimycotic with activity against almost all species of pathogenic fungi.

Pharmacokinetics

Oxiconazole is a broad-spectrum imidazole derivative whose antifungal activity is derived primarily from the inhibition of ergosterol biosynthesis, which is critical for cellular membrane integrity. It has fungicidal or fungistatic activity in vitro against a number of pathogenic fungi including the following dermatophytes, and yeasts: T. rubrum, T. mentagrophytes, T. tonsurans, T. violaceum, E. floccosum, M. canis, M. audouini, M. gypseum, C. albicans, and M. furfur.

Side Effects

Local irritations such as itching and burning sensations, and allergic reactions may occur in rare cases and are mainly due to the galenic formulation.
