What is Ethylhexylglycerin?
Description
Ethylhexylglycerin is an alkyl glyceryl ether. This means that the ethylhexyl group is bound to glycerin at one end by an ether linkage. Although they are also alkyl glyceryl ethers, Batyl Alcohol and Chimyl Alcohol (may also be called Cetyl Glyceryl Ether) have traditionally been used as cosmetic labeling names for these alkyl glyceryl ethers. Glyceryl Lauryl Ether and Isostearyl Glyceryl Ether are also alkyl glyceryl ethers that may be used in cosmetic products.
The Uses of Ethylhexylglycerin
Ethylhexylglycerin is the novel raw material for deodorants application and is widely used as a cosmetic emollient. Ethylhexylglycerin reliably inhibits the odor-causing bacteria, yeast and fungi on the skin.
Safety
ethylhexylglycerin can be irritating to some, especially those who are predisposed to skin irritation (such as people who suffer from sensitive skin, eczema, or psoriasis).
Contact allergens
This glycerol monoalkylether is used as a skin conditioning agent, with bactericidal properties against Gram-positive bacteria.
Synthesis
Synthesis of ethylhexylglycerin is via the catalytic splitting of ethylhexylglycidyl ether followed by the addition of water. The product can then be purified by vacuum distillation.
