The Uses of Enrofloxacin

Enrofloxacin is a broad spectrum antibiotic bactericidal agent used in veterinary medicine to treat animals afflicted with certain bacterial infections.

ChEBI: A quinolinemonocarboxylic acid that is 1,4-dihydroquinoline-3-carboxylic acid substituted by an oxo group at position 4, a fluoro group at position 6, a cyclopropyl group at position 1 and a 4-ethylpiperazin-1-yl group at position 7. It is a veterinary ant bacterial agent used for the treatment of pets.

Veterinary Drugs and Treatments

Enrofloxacin is approved for use in dogs and cats (oral only) for the management of diseases associated with bacteria susceptible to enrofloxacin. Because of the dosage restriction (5 mg/kg) for cats, enrofloxacin is generally used in this species only for the most susceptible bacterial infections. It is also been approved for use in cattle (not dairy cattle or veal calves).

Description

Enrofloxacin is a compound that originates from a group of fluoroquinolones that is widely used in veterinary medicine as an antibacterial agent (this antibiotic is not approved for use as a drug in humans). It reveals strong antibiotic activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, mainly due to the inhibition of bacterial gyrase and topoisomerase IV enzymatic actions.

Side Effects

Common side effects of enrofloxacin are upset stomach, as can be seen with any oral medication.ln most cases, this would be vomiting or appetite loss; giving the medication with food shouldsave the problem. Enrofloxacin can produce crystals in the urine, especially if the patient is dehydrated.Thesecrystals may show up on a laboratory test thus it is important to be aware of this.Enrofloxacincrystals should not be confused with more clinically relevant struvite, oxalate, or urate crystals.
