Chemical properties

The industrial product is a mixture of (±) cis and trans four isomers, brownish yellow oily liquid. Pure product is colorless oily liquid, Soluble in ethanol, benzene, toluene and other organic solvents; insoluble in water. Storage stability at room temperature, unstable to light, easy to decompose in case of alkali.

Methothrin is mainly used to control pests such as mosquitoes and flies. It is often used to make mosquito coils and electric mosquito repellent sheets. It has the characteristics of fast knockdown speed, good repellent performance, and strong lethality.

Synthesis

Methothrin is derived from the esterification of sodium chrysanthemate and 4-(methoxymethyl)benzyl chloride in a solvent.
