What is ranaconitine?
Occurrence
An aconitine alkaloid, ranaconitine occurs in the ethanolic extract of the Bulgarian plant Aconitum ranunculaefolium. It forms colourless needles when crystallized from EtOH and is dextrorotatory with a specific rotation of [α]D +33.2° (c 0.5, CHCI3 ). Hydrolysis with 5% KOH furnishes ranaconine, C23H37NO7 , m.p. 107-109°C and N-acetylanthranilic acid.
The Uses of ranaconitine
Ranaconitine is an important diterpenoid alkaloid from Aconitum sinomontanum and displayspotential anti-inflammatory analgesic activity as well as antagonism and modulation of voltage-gated Na+ channels.
