What is Isobornyl propanoate?

Description

Isobomyl propionate has a characteristic, definite turpentine odor but less pungent than the corresponding acetate. May be prepared from isoborneol and propionic acid.

Chemical properties

Isobornyl propanoate is a colorless oily liquid. Almost insoluble in water, poorly soluble in Propylene glycol and Glycerin, soluble in alcohol and oils. Sp.Gr. 0.978. B.P.245°C. Isobornyl propionate has a characteristic, definite turpentine odor, but less pungent than the corresponding acetate.

Occurrence

Reported found in kumquat peel oil.

The Uses of Isobornyl propanoate

Suggested for use in Fougeres, Chypres, Pine fragrances, Citrus type Colognes, Lavender compositions for room sprays, etc. Traces of this ester are occasionally used in flavor compositions for imitation fruit, e.g. Strawberry, Blackcurrant, etc.

From isoborneol and propionic acid.
