Bismuth hydroxide is used for the removal of nitrate and other anions from water,it is used in nanoplate-based carbon dioxide gas sensor,it is also used for the hydrolysis of ribonucleic acid and as an absorbent for rutin and quercetin.

Preparation
Bismuth hydroxide is precipitated by adding sodium hydroxide to a solution of bismuth nitrate.
