The Uses of ANTIMONY(III) IODIDE

Antimony(III) iodide is used as a dopant in the preparation of thermoelectric materials.

Preparation

It adds to ethers, aldehydes, and thiols. Antimony triiodide is prepared by reacting iodine with antimony or antimony sulfide in an organic solvent. The triiodide is used in medicine.

Purification Methods

It sublimes under vacuum as a red solid with an orange vapour. It hydrolyses to the yellow oxyiodide with H2O. [Schenk in Handbook of Preparative Inorganic Chemistry (Ed. Brauer) Academic Press Vol I p 614 1963.]
