Obtained (poor yield) by nitration of 3-hydroxyacetophenone,
with nitric acid (d = 1.4) in acetic acid, at 70° (10%)
with cupric nitrate in acetic acid–acetic anhydride mixture, between 12° and 15° (<1%).
