Description
Methyl salicylate is the main ingredient in wintergreen oil, which is distilled from the leaves of wintergreen. Methyl salicylate has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, de-erythematous, and anti-irritant properties, and is used in a number of OTC analgesic creams or gels designed for topical use. Methyl salicylate also has a vasodilatory effect, leading to an increase in local blood flow, which in turn increases tissue temperature, resulting in a de-erythematising effect.
