SYMPTOMS: Symptoms of exposure to this compound include respiratory depression, sedation, occasional allergic reactions (particularly affecting the skin), purpura, exfoliative dermatitis, erythema multiforme (the Stevens-Johnson syndrome) and toxic epidermal necrolysis. Excessive exposure may cause nystagmus, ataxia and "hangover" with impaired judgment. In the elderly or in the presence of pain, paradoxical excitement, restlessness and confusion may occur. In children, irritability and hyperexcitability may occur. Toxic effects of overexposure may include prolonged coma, cardiovascular depression with hypotension and shock leading to renal failure, hypothermia and pyrexia. Characteristic erythematous or hemorrhagic blisters (bullae) rarely occur. Death may occur due to respiratory and circulatory failure. Inhalation of the dust may cause irritation of the upper respiratory tract. Ingestion may cause drowsiness, headache and irregular respiration. This compound may also cause skin and eye irritation. Nausea and vomiting may occur. Chronic effects of exposure to this compound include neurological and psychic functions that closely resemble those of alcohol. Symptoms of chronic poisoning include disorientation, mental confusion, ataxia, dizziness, depression and skin rashes. ACUTE/CHRONIC HAZARDS: This compound is harmful by ingestion or inhalation. When heated to decomposition it emits toxic fumes of nitrogen oxides and sodium oxide. (NTP, 1992)
