SECTION 5: Firefighting measures

Suitable extinguishing media

If material involved in fire: Extinguish fire using agent suitable for type of surrounding fire. (Material itself does not burn or burns with difficulty.)

Specific hazards arising from the chemical

Excerpt from ERG Guide 171 [Substances (Low to Moderate Hazard)]: Some may burn but none ignite readily. Containers may explode when heated. Some may be transported hot. For UN3508, be aware of possible short circuiting as this product is transported in a charged state. (ERG, 2016)

Special protective actions for fire-fighters

In case of fire in the surroundings, use appropriate extinguishing media. In case of fire: keep drums, etc., cool by spraying with water.

SECTION 6: Accidental release measures

Personal precautions, protective equipment and emergency procedures

Personal protection: particulate filter respirator adapted to the airborne concentration of the substance. Do NOT let this chemical enter the environment. Sweep spilled substance into sealable containers. If appropriate, moisten first to prevent dusting. Carefully collect remainder. Then store and dispose of according to local regulations.

Environmental precautions

Personal protection: particulate filter respirator adapted to the airborne concentration of the substance. Do NOT let this chemical enter the environment. Vacuum spilled material with specialist equipment. Carefully collect remainder. Then store and dispose of according to local regulations.

Methods and materials for containment and cleaning up

Environmental considerations-Land spill: Dig a pit, pond, lagoon, or holding area to contain liquid or solid material. /SRP: If time permits, pits, ponds, lagoons, soak holes, or holding areas should be sealed with an impermeable flexible membrane liner./ Cover solids with a plastic sheet to prevent dissolving in rain or fire fighting water.

SECTION 7: Handling and storage

Precautions for safe handling

See Chemical Dangers. Handling in a well ventilated place. Wear suitable protective clothing. Avoid contact with skin and eyes. Avoid formation of dust and aerosols. Use non-sparking tools. Prevent fire caused by electrostatic discharge steam.

Conditions for safe storage, including any incompatibilities

PRECAUTIONS FOR "CARCINOGENS": Storage site should be as close as practical to lab in which carcinogens are to be used, so that only small quantities required for ... expt need to be carried. NIOSH considers nickel metal and other compounds (as Ni) to be a potential occupational carcinogen. Nickel metal and other compounds (as Ni)

Decomposes at 848°C. This produces toxic fumes of sulfur trioxide and nickel monoxide. The solution in water is a weak acid.

Chemical stability

Stable @ 40 deg c hexahydrate

Possibility of hazardous reactions

Gives an acidic solution when dissolved in water. Emits highly toxic fumes of metallic nickel, oxides of sulfur, and oxides of nitrogen when heated to decomposition [Lewis, 3rd ed., 1993, p. 910].

Other Information

At temperatures up to 330 °C nickel (II) sulphate containing water of crystallization will gradually release its total water content.Depending on the degree of exposure, periodic medical examination is suggested. The symptoms of asthma often do not become manifest until a few hours have passed and they are aggravated by physical effort. Rest and medical observation are therefore essential.Anyone who has shown symptoms of sensitization due to this substance should avoid all further contact with nickel, nickel compounds and other metal compounds of e.g. copper, chromium and cobalt.Do NOT take working clothes home.Isolate contaminated clothing by sealing in a bag or other container. The recommendations on this Card also apply to Nickel sulfate hexahydrate (CAS 10101-97-0) and heptahydrate (CAS 10101-98-1).
