Following skin contact

Take off contaminated clothing immediately. Wash off with soap and plenty of water. Consult a doctor.

Following eye contact

Rinse with pure water for at least 15 minutes. Consult a doctor.

Following ingestion

Rinse mouth with water. Do not induce vomiting. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Call a doctor or Poison Control Center immediately.

Most important symptoms/effects, acute and delayed

Excerpt from ERG Guide 152 [Substances - Toxic (Combustible)]: Highly toxic, may be fatal if inhaled, swallowed or absorbed through skin. Contact with molten substance may cause severe burns to skin and eyes. Avoid any skin contact. Effects of contact or inhalation may be delayed. Fire may produce irritating, corrosive and/or toxic gases. Runoff from fire control or dilution water may be corrosive and/or toxic and cause pollution. (ERG, 2016)

Indication of immediate medical attention and special treatment needed, if necessary

Basic treatment: Establish a patent airway. Suction if necessary. Aggressive airway control may be needed. Watch for signs of respiratory insufficiency and assist ventilations if necessary. Administer oxygen by nonrebreather mask at 10 to 15 L/min. Monitor for pulmonary edema and treat if necessary . Monitor for shock and treat if necessary . Anticipate seizures and treat if necessary . For eye contamination, flush eyes immediately with water. Irrigate each eye continuously with normal saline during transport . Do not use emetics. For ingestion, rinse mouth and administer 5 ml/kg up to 200 ml of water for dilution if the patient can swallow, has a strong gag reflex, and does not drool. Administer activated charcoal . Organophosphates and related compounds

SECTION 5: Firefighting measures

Suitable extinguishing media

Excerpt from ERG Guide 152 [Substances - Toxic (Combustible)]: SMALL FIRE: Dry chemical, CO2 or water spray. LARGE FIRE: Water spray, fog or regular foam. Move containers from fire area if you can do it without risk. Dike fire-control water for later disposal; do not scatter the material. Use water spray or fog; do not use straight streams. FIRE INVOLVING TANKS OR CAR/TRAILER LOADS: Fight fire from maximum distance or use unmanned hose holders or monitor nozzles. Do not get water inside containers. Cool containers with flooding quantities of water until well after fire is out. Withdraw immediately in case of rising sound from venting safety devices or discoloration of tank. ALWAYS stay away from tanks engulfed in fire. For massive fire, use unmanned hose holders or monitor nozzles; if this is impossible, withdraw from area and let fire burn. (ERG, 2016)

Specific hazards arising from the chemical

Excerpt from ERG Guide 152 [Substances - Toxic (Combustible)]: Combustible material: may burn but does not ignite readily. Containers may explode when heated. Runoff may pollute waterways. Substance may be transported in a molten form. (ERG, 2016)

Special protective actions for fire-fighters

Persistence and degradability

AEROBIC: Isofenphos degrades slowly (half-life of 352 days) under aerobic soil conditions(1). Although isofenophos is persistent when first applied to soils, microbial adaptations enhance degradation in subsequent years(1). In a week-long incubation study using 6 soils with a history of isofenphos use and 19 soils with no previous use, an increased rate of mineralization in the soils with previous use history (35.9 +/- 2.4% of the parent mineralized to CO2) was found compared with the nonhistory soils (2.4+/-1.0%)(1). In a 4-week incubation study, 62.8% of the parent was recovered from a soil with no history of use and only 12.9% from a soil that was previously treated with isofenphos(1). Mineralization of the aromatic ring was evident(1). Isofenphos oxygen analog (also called isofenphos oxon) was identified as degradation product(1). If both isofenphos and the structurally similar isofenphos oxon are considered together, the aerobic soil metabolism half-life is on the order of 3 years(1). Isofenphos oxon accumulated only in a nonhistory soil(1). Repeated annual treatments of isofenphos increased the enhanced degradation activity in soil(1). Enhanced degradation activity was still apparent in soils more than 162 weeks after the last treatment(1). Exposure of soil to salicylic acid, a secondary hydrolysis product, resulted in enhanced degradation of isofenphos(1). The formation of salicylic acid in soil may be a key factor in triggering the susceptibility of isofenphos to enhanced degradation(1). It is not clear whether the presence of other organophosphates may trigger enhanced degradation(1).

Bioaccumulative potential

BCFs of 94.5 (fillet), 469 (viscera), and 277 (whole body) in fish tissues were measured for isofenphos(1). According to a classification scheme(2), these BCF values suggests the potential for bioconcentration in aquatic organisms is high(SRC).

Mobility in soil

The Koc of isofenphos ranged from 633 to 1,474 on four soils(1). According to a classification scheme(2), these Koc values suggest that isofenphos is expected to have low mobility in soil(SRC).

Other adverse effects

no data available

SECTION 13: Disposal considerations

Disposal methods

Product

The material can be disposed of by removal to a licensed chemical destruction plant or by controlled incineration with flue gas scrubbing. Do not contaminate water, foodstuffs, feed or seed by storage or disposal. Do not discharge to sewer systems.

Contaminated packaging

Containers can be triply rinsed (or equivalent) and offered for recycling or reconditioning. Alternatively, the packaging can be punctured to make it unusable for other purposes and then be disposed of in a sanitary landfill. Controlled incineration with flue gas scrubbing is possible for combustible packaging materials.
