Persistence and degradability

AEROBIC: Pure cultures of microorganisms and mixed microorganisms in soil degraded chlorsulfuron(1). The half-lives of chlorsulfuron in two non-sterile soils were 5 days and 15 days at 30 deg C compared to the half-lives of 21 days and 28 days, respectively, in the sterile soils(1). Microbial breakdown accounted for 79% of the total initial degradation in a silt loam soil (pH 5.9, organic matter 5%), 50% in a sandy loam soil (pH 6.5, organic matter 1%) and 91% in a silt loam soil (pH 8.0, organic matter 5%)(1). On the other hand, microbial breakdown accounted for only 25% of total loss in a silty clay loam soil (pH 5.6, organic matter 2.4%)(2).

An estimated BCF of 3 was calculated for chlorsulfuron(SRC), using a log Kow of -1.34(1) and a regression-derived equation(2). According to a classification scheme(3), this BCF suggests the potential for bioconcentration in aquatic organisms is low(SRC).

The soil adsorption coefficient Kd of chlorsulfuron in sandy soil (88% sand,4% silt, 7.2% clay, 0.6% organic matter, pH 6.5), sandy clay (71.1% sand,8.6% silt, 20.3% clay,1.1% organic matter, pH 7.5), and a clay soil (19.2% sand,26.2% silt, 54.6% clay,1.5% organic matter, pH 7.6) was 0.170, 0.295, and 0.99, respectively(1). Using the percentage of organic carbon in each soil, these adsorption coefficients correspond to Koc values of 47, 45, and 110 in the sandy soil, sandy clay, and clay soil, respectively. Based on experimental soil adsorption coefficient's, the Koc values for chlorsulfuron in soil have been estimated to be in the range 6-31 in the soil pH range 6.2-8.1(2-5). According to a classification scheme(6), these Koc values suggests that chlorsulfuron is expected to have high to very high mobility in soil(SRC).
