If vomiting occurs, lean patient forward or place on left side (head-down position, if possible) to maintain an open airway and prevent aspiration. Establish forced ventilation to keep levels below explosive limit. Absorb liquids in vermiculite, dry sand, earth, peat, carbon, or similar material and deposit in sealed containers. Oil-skimming equipment and sorbent foams can be applied to slick if done immediately. Keep this chemical out of a confined space ... because of the possibility of an explosion ... Sources of ignition such as smoking and open flames are prohibited where methyl ethyl ketone is handled, used or stored in a manner that could create a potential fire or explosion hazard. Metal containers involving the transfer of 5 gallons or more of diethyl ketone should be grounded and bonded. Drums must be equipped with self-closing valves, pressure vacuum bungs, and flame arresters. Use only non-sparking tools and equipment, especially when opening and closing containers of methyl ethyl ketone.

Reproductive toxicity

No information on the reproductive or developmental effects of methyl ethyl ketone in humans was located. An inhalation study in mice exposed to methyl ethyl ketone reported decreased fetal weight and fetal malformations. Developmental effects have also been reported in rats following oral and inhalation exposures.

The substance is irritating to the eyes and respiratory tract. The substance may cause effects on the central nervous system. Exposure could cause unconsciousness. If swallowed the substance easily enters the airways and could result in aspiration pneumonitis.

Persistence and degradability

AEROBIC: Methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) is readily oxidized by microorganisms in activated sludge following selection and/or adaptation, with over 80% being removed in 24 hr. Metabolism in unacclimated sludges is slow.

Bioaccumulative potential

An estimated BCF of 3 was calculated in fish for methyl ethyl ketone(SRC), using a log Kow of 0.29(1) and a regression-derived equation(2). According to a classification scheme(3), this BCF suggests the potential for bioconcentration in aquatic organisms is low(SRC).

Mobility in soil

Measured Koc values of 29 and 34 were obtained for methyl ethyl ketone in a silt loam and sandy loam soil respectively(1). A measured Koc value of 3.55 has also been reported(2). According to a classification scheme(3), these Koc values suggest that methyl ethyl ketone is expected to have very high mobility in soil(SRC).
