Mineralization of 1-nitropyrene in aerobic sediment/water microcosms was slow; only 0.24, 0.61, and 0.76% mineralization was reported after 8 weeks incubation in microcosms constructed with sediment and water collected from an oil-contaminated drainage pond, a saltwater pool, and from Redfish Bay, respectively, sites proximal to the Harbor Island oil tank farm near Port Aransas, TX(1).
