Uses |
(3-Glycidyloxypropyl)methyldiethoxysilane is an organo-functional silane that can be used as a coupling agent between inorganic fillers (powdered silicas, glass, fiberglass, ceramics, etc.) and a wide variety of polymers such as epoxy, melamine, phenolic and urethane resins, polystyrene plastic, acrylic sealants, butyl rubber and water soluble polymers that contain hydroxyl groups and/or primary or secondary amine groups.
(3-Glycidyloxypropyl)methyldiethoxysilane should be handled with care. The recommended method for application of it onto substrates is from a 95% denatured ethanol-5% water solution. The ethanol-water solution should be adjusted to a pH of 4.5 to 5.5 with acetic acid, followed by the addition of it. The recommended concentration is 2.5%, which will yield a 2% concentration of the hydrolyzed silane. Mix the solution for at least 5 minutes to insure that the hydrolysis is complete. Glass fibers, fillers or other substrates should be immersed for several minutes in the silylating solution. After treatment, substrates should be washed twice with denatured ethanol. Curing of the silane films requires 5-10 minutes at 110°C or 24 hours at room temperature with less than 60% relative humidity. Use proper precautions required for handling flammable materials when carrying out these procedures. |
