The main components of cedar oil are α-cedrene, β-cedrene, cedrol and cedar wood, etc. It can be processed into a series of products for the formulation of perfumes for make-up and soap. Cypress oil can be extracted from the dry roots of cypress tree, being one of China's major exported essential oils.

It is irritating. The related products also include artificial cedar oil formulated with sesquiterpene and rosin.
Cedar root, trunk or its waste are used as raw material; use steam distillation to obtain crude oil with the oil rate of 1-6%. Cedar crude oil was fractionated to obtain refined cedar oil.

Two types of cedarwood oil exist: Atlas cedarwood oil from Morocco (Cedrus atlantica) and one derived from the Juniperus virginiana (or red cedar) that is a juniper of the united States (its oil, however, is very similar to true cedarwood). The oil may cause skin irritation when used in high concentrations. Cedarwood oil is obtained from recently dried, leafy, young twigs.
