What is Sorbitan?

Chemical properties

A white crystalline powder, odorless, sweet, and hygroscopic. Soluble in water, slightly soluble in ethanol, insoluble in chloroform and ether.

The Uses of Sorbitan

Sorbitan can be used as Diuretic dehydrator for the treatment of cerebral edema and increased intracranial pressure, increased intraocular pressure of glaucoma, and for edema and oliguria with normal heart and kidney function.

Preparation

Sorbitan was prepared by Hydrogenation reduction of glucose in prestence of 0.1% nickel catalyst.
