Lutetium Chloride is applied in making laser crystal, and also have specialized uses in ceramics, glass, phosphors, lasers. Stable Lutetium can be used as catalysts in petroleum cracking in refineries and can also be used in alkylation, hydrogenation, and polymerization applications.

Lutetium(III) chloride hexahydrate is used as a catalyst and laboratory reagent. It is also used in ceramics, optical glasses, electrical components and photo-optical material. It is one of the components of scintillating composition. It serves as a precursor for the preparation of other lutetium complexes. It finds application as one of the starting materials for aluminate phosphors.
