What is Fusidine?
Absorption
Sodium fusidic acid tablets have a 91% oral bioavailability. Absorption of the film-coated tablets is complete when compared to a solution, however oral absorption is variable. Oral fusidic acid hemihydrate (suspension) achieved a 22.5% bioavailability in pediatric patients following a 20 milligram/kilogram dose.
Description
Fusidic acid was found in the culture broth of a fungus imperfectus, Fusidium coccineum, by Leo in 1962. It has a steroid struc ture but shows no hormonal activity.
Chemical properties
White Solid
The Uses of Fusidine
Fusidic acid is a bacteriostatic antibiotic. Fusidic Acid suppresses nitric oxide lysis of pancreatic islet cells. Inhibits protein synthesis in prokaryotes by inhibiting the ribosome-dependent activity of G factor and translocation of peptidyl-tRNA.

Indications
For the treatment of bacterial infections.
What are the applications of Application
Fusidic acid is a bacteriostatic antibiotic that only works on gram-positive bacteria
Background
An antibiotic isolated from the fermentation broth of Fusidium coccineum. (From Merck Index, 11th ed) It acts by inhibiting translocation during protein synthesis. It is often used topically in creams and eyedrops but is available in systemic formulations including tablets and injections.
Definition
ChEBI: A steroid antibiotic that is isolated from the fermentation broth of Fusidium coccineum.
brand name
Fucidine (Bristol-Myers Squibb).
Hazard
Moderately toxic inhibitor of translocation during protein synthesis.
Biological Activity
Fusidic acid shows very strong activity against Staphy lococcus aureus and weak activity against other gram-positive bacteria and gram-negative cocci and Mycobacterium.
Biochem/physiol Actions
Fusidic acid is a tetracyclic triterpenoid with antibiotic activity against Gram-positive bacteria. It is derived from Fusidium coccineum. It shows its activity against anaerobes, corynebacterial, Nocardia, and Neisseria species. Fusidic acid exhibits therapeutic effects against Staphylococcal infections, skin infections.
Pharmacokinetics
Fusidic acid is a bacteriostatic antibiotic and helps prevent bacterial growth while the immune system clears the infection.
Metabolism
Metabolites include dicarboxylic ester/acid, 3-keto fusidic acid, hydroxy fusidic acid, glucuronide fusidic acid and a glycol metabolite.
