The Uses of Dodecylbenzenesulphonic acid
Dopant for conducting polymers strong acid catalyst for amino cross-linked coatings
Definition
ChEBI: 2-dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid is a member of the class dodecylbenzenesulfonic acids that is benzenesulfonic acid in which the hydrogen at position 2 of the phenyl ring is substituted by a dodecyl group. It has a role as an animal metabolite.
What are the applications of Application
Dodecylbenzenesulphonic acid(DBSA) can be used as a catalyst for the esterification of fatty acids (oleic acids) to produce biodiesel. It can be used as a Bronsted acid catalyst for the green synthesis of quinoxaline derivatives which are used in a variety of pharmacological profiles. It may be electrodeposited with polypyrrole(PPy) films on the aluminium alloy to protect against corrosion. Water based nanofluids with enhanced thermal conductivity and specific heat capacity may be prepared by doping polyanaline (PANI) into dodecylbenzenesulphonic acid. Dodecylbenzenesulphonic acid is also a dopant for conducting polymers and a strong acid catalyst for amino crosslinked coatings.
General Description
Dodecylbenzenesulphonic acid is a colorless liquid. Dodecylbenzenesulphonic acid is soluble in water. Dodecylbenzenesulphonic acid is corrosive to metals and tissue. Dodecylbenzenesulphonic acid is used to make detergents.
Air & Water Reactions
Soluble in water.
Reactivity Profile
Dodecylbenzenesulphonic acid is corrosive. When heated to decomposition or on contact with strong acids produces highly toxic fumes of oxides of sulfur. The toxicity and hazards of individual alkylbenzene sulfonic acids must be assessed individually [Kirk-Othmer, 3rd ed., Vol. 22, 1978, p. 45].
Health Hazard
EYES AND SKIN: A 0.5% to 1% concentration in water caused significant irritation. The technical grade is corrosive and may cause irreversible damage to eyes and skin. INGESTION: Irritation of the mouth, esophagus and stomach. Diarrhea, intestinal distention and occasional vomiting.
Fire Hazard
Special Hazards of Combustion Products: May give off SO 3 , SO 2 and H 2 S
Flammability and Explosibility
Not classified
Agricultural Uses
Insecticide, Adjuvant, Biocide: Dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid and its salts are used as degreasers in meat-cutting rooms. Also used as a laboratory chemical, to make detergents, and in electronically cleaning and pickling baths. Not listed for use in EU countries. Approved for use in the U.S. and other countries. There are 30 global suppliers.

First aid
If this chemical gets into the eyes, remove anycontact lenses at once and irrigate immediately for at least15 min, occasionally lifting upper and lower lids. Seek medical attention immediately. If this chemical contacts theskin, remove contaminated clothing and wash immediatelywith soap and water. Seek medical attention immediately. Ifthis chemical has been inhaled, remove from exposure, begin rescue breathing (using universal precautions, including resuscitation mask) if breathing has stopped and CPR ifheart action has stopped. Transfer promptly to a medicalfacility. When this chemical has been swallowed, get medical attention. If victim is conscious, administer water ormilk. Do not induce vomiting
storage
Follow regulations in OSHA29CFR1910.134 or European Standard EN149. Use aNIOSH/MSHA- or European Standard EN149-approvedrespirator; or use an approved supplied-air respirator with afull face-piece operated in the positive-pressure mode, orwith a full face-piece, hood, or helmet in the continuousflow mode; or use a NIOSH/MSHA- or European StandardEN149-approved self-contained breathing apparatus with afull face-piece operated in pressure-demand or other positive-pressure mode.
Shipping
Dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid requires a shippinglabel of “CORROSIVE.” It falls in Hazard Class 8 andPacking Group II. The symbol “D” identifies proper shipping names which are appropriate for describing materialsfor domestic transportation but may be inappropriate forinternational transportation under the provisions of international regulations (e.g., IMO, ICAO). An alternate propershipping name may be selected when either domestic orinternational transportation is involved.
Incompatibilities
May attack metals, forming flammablehydrogen gas. Keep away from combustible materials.
