What is BISMARCK BROWN Y?

Definition

ChEBI: A bis(azo) compound that is 1,1'-(1,3-phenylene)bis(diazene) in which both azene hydrogens are replaced by 2,4-diaminophenyl groups. A metachromatic dye which stains acid mucins yellow. It is also a constituent of Papanicolaou's EA solutions, used for cerv cal, and other smears. Its dihydrochloride salt is also a biological dye known as Bismark brown Y.

Preparation

2 Moore’s Nitrous acid?treatment 3 Moore’s Benzene-1,3-diamine dihydrochloride (this product may be based on the double azo dyes as the main component of the mixture, and commodity dye is usually composed of dihydrochloride composition), and made free base.

Properties and Applications

yellow brown. Soluble in ethanol, acetone and benzene. In concentrated sulfuric acid for brown, dilution after red brown; In concentrated nitric acid for orange solution, to yellow. Dye aqueous solution to join hydrochloric acid don’t change color; Add 10% sodium hydroxide solution have orange precipitation.
