What is β-Endorphin?

Description

β-Endorphins are peptides that exert effects throughout the body. In the brain, they are considered to be both neurotransmitters and neuromodulators, as they can elicit more stable and long-lasting effects on more distant targets than typical neurotransmitters; β-endorphins exhibit a notably high degree of degradation-resistance in the brain. They are produced primarily by the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland and in pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC) cells primarily located in the hypothalamus[1].

Definition

ChEBI: A polypeptide consisting of 31 amino acid residues in the sequence Tyr-Gly-Gly-Phe-Met-Thr-Ser-Glu-Lys-Ser-Gln-Thr-Pro-Leu-Val-Thr-Leu-Phe-Lys-Asn-Ala-Ile-Ile-Lys-Asn-Ala-Tyr-Lys-Lys-Gly-Glu. It is an endogenous opioid peptide neurotransmitter found in th neurons of both the central and peripheral nervous system and results from processing of the precursor protein proopiomelanocortin (POMC).

Hazard

A reproductive hazard.
