2-Methyl-4-(2,2,3-trimethyl-3-cyclopenten-1-yl)butanol is a colorless liquid with a woody, tenacious sandalwood odor with a slight musk nuance. It is prepared by sequential aldol condensation of ??-campholenaldehyde with propanal, hydrogenation, and reduction.
It is used to perfume soaps and detergents.
??-Campholenaldehyde (2,2,3-trimethyl-3-cyclopenteneacetaldehyde,C10H16O, Mr 152.24 is obtained by epoxidation of ??-pinene and rearrangement of the epoxide and serves as starting material for a number of additional “campholene sandalwood” aroma chemicals.
