Xanthine (English: xanthine), Chinese alias 3,7-dihydro-1H-purine-2,6-dione, 2,6-dihydroxypurine, xanthine is a widely distributed in human body and other organisms. A purine base in organs and body fluids, often used as a mild stimulant and bronchodilator, especially in the treatment of asthma symptoms. Common mild stimulants such as caffeine, theophylline, and theobromine (found mainly in chocolate) are derived from xanthine. Xanthine is also a product of purine metabolism and is converted to uric acid by the action of xanthine oxidase.
Uses It is used in biochemical research and organic synthesis, and is an intermediate of the drug theobromine.
It can be used for food coloring, and can also be added to poultry feed to make the egg yolk yellow.
