Mk-677 is a drug that is secreted as a potent, orally effective growth hormone, mimicking the effects of GH-stimulating endogenous hormones. Mk-677 has been shown to increase release and produce several hormones that consistently increase plasma levels, including GH and insulin-like growth factor 1(IGF-1), without affecting cortisol levels. Potential treatments are currently being developed to reduce levels of these hormones, such as in children or the elderly with growth hormone deficiency, and human studies have shown increases in muscle and bone mineral density, making it a promising treatment for frail elderly people. It also alters the metabolism of fat in the body, so it may have an application in the treatment of obesity.
