Sodium iodide is a white solid produced by the reaction of sodium carbonate or sodium hydroxide with hydroiodic acid and then evaporation of the solution. It is used as a raw material for making iodine. Acid solution of sodium iodide used in medicine and photography shows reducability by forming hydroiodic acid. Sodium iodide is used as analytical reagent and microanalytical method for palladium, platinum and thallium. Iodine cosolvent (sodium iodide forms a complex with iodine in aqueous solution to increase the solubility of iodine), can also be used as pharmaceutical, photographic latex and the raw material of single crystal.

At room temperature, dihydrate precipitates from the solution, which is a colorless prismical crystal. Within -13.5~31.5, pentahydrate can precipitate and react with sulfur dioxide to generate the corresponding stable compound with reducibility, which can be oxidized by oxidation and free iodine
