       Sulfadiazine is a sulfonamides anti-infection drug commonly used clinically in China, also known as sulfadipyridazine and diazin. The molecular structure of sulfadiazine is similar to p-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), and it can competitively act with PABA on dihydrofolate synthetase in bacteria, thus preventing PABA from being used as raw material to synthesize folic acid needed by bacteria. It reduces the metabolically active form of tetrahydrofolate, which is essential for the synthesis of purines, thymine and DNA, thus inhibiting bacterial growth and reproduction. Sulfadiazine has inhibitory effect on sensitive bacteria such as hemolytic streptococcus, staphylococcus, meningococci, pneumococcus, gonorrhea coccus, Escherichia coli, dysentery bacillus, and microorganisms such as chlamydia trachomatis, actinomycetes, Plasmodium, Nucardia stellaris and Toxoplasma gondii. The advantage of sulfadiazine is that the effective concentration in the blood is higher, the serum protein binder rate is low, the drug is easy to penetrate into the cerebrospinal fluid, it is the first choice for the treatment of epidemic meningitis, but in recent years, the drug-resistant strains of sulfadiazine and other sulfadiazine drugs have increased (domestic report 20%, foreign report 33% resistance to this product). People who are resistant to this product can be treated with penicillin. The disadvantage of sulfadiazine is that it is easy to crystallize in the urinary tract, so it needs to be taken with sodium bicarbonate. In recent years, studies have shown that its half-life is 17 hours, so it can be a medium sulfonamides, two times a day is enough. But it is generally still used for short - term effect. Sulfadiazine is commonly used in clinical treatment of epidemic cerebrospinal meningitis, upper respiratory tract infection, epidemic meningitis, otitis media, carbuncle, puerperal fever, plague, local soft tissue or systemic infection, urinary tract infection and acute bacterial dysentery, but also for respiratory tract infection, intestinal tract infection, typhoid fever, etc.
