      Streptomycin is a broad-spectrum basic antibiotic developed from the culture medium of Streptomyces grayi. The molecular formula is C21H39N7O12, and the molecular structure is very complex. It is composed of Streptomyces guanidine, Streptomyces and N-methyl-L-glucose. It is often in the form of sulfate, white or slightly yellow crystal, odorless and bitter, hygroscopic, soluble in water, insoluble in methanol, ethanol, acetone,  relatively stable. Because streptomycin molecule contains an aldehyde group, the property is not stable, hydrogenated into dihydrostreptomycin, chemical properties are more stable, side effects are less, but the effectiveness is unchanged. Commonly used streptomycin basically is streptomycin armour, have another streptomycin b to wait. Streptomycin has a strong antibacterial effect on Mycobacterium tuberculosis, and is an important anti-tuberculosis drug. The minimum inhibitory concentration of Streptomycin against Mycobacterium tuberculosis is generally 0.5μg/ mL. Streptomycin also has a certain antibacterial effect on Escherichia coli, Aerobacteria, Pneumonia bacillus, Salmonella, dysentery bacillus, Brucella, Influenzae bacillus, Pertussis bacillus and some gram-positive bacteria, such as Bacillus anthracis, Listeria, Staphylococcus. Pneumococcus, Streptococcus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus (some strains) and other poor effect. Bacteria are prone to develop resistance to streptomycin and are often stable once developed. Therefore, except for tuberculosis in clinical application is very limited. There was partial cross - resistance between streptomycin and neomycin and kanamycin. This cross-resistance is usually unidirectional, with most strains resistant to neomycin and kanamycin showing a significant increase in resistance to streptomycin, whereas streptomycin resistant strains tend to remain sensitive to neomycin and kanamycin. Streptomycin and other antimicrobial drugs or anti-tuberculosis drugs combined application can reduce or delay the generation of drug resistance, clinical mainly used in the treatment of various tuberculosis, plague, whooping cough, bacterial dysentery, urinary tract infection, meningitis, peritonitis, etc. Commonly used for intramuscular injection, Streptomycin sulfate as injection, can be stored for 3 years without change in effectiveness. Can also be made into tablets, but oral absorption is not easy, only suitable for intestinal infections (such as tuberculous enteritis, bacterial dysentery, etc.). TB treatment, often with other anti-tb drugs (such as amino acid or isoniazid) share, in order to reduce the side effects due to streptomycin resistance is larger, the current dihydrostreptomycin is commonly used in treatment, it is made of streptomycin molecule chain mildew sugar aldehyde via reduction, the antibacterial efficiency same as the streptomycin, but much lower toxicity to the auditory nerve.
