1,2-Dichloroethane

The chemical compound 1,2-dichloroethane commonly known as ethylene dichloride (EDC), is a chlorinated hydrocarbon. It is a colourless liquid with a chloroform-like odour. The most common use of 1,2-dichloroethane is in the production of vinyl chloride, which is used to make polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipes, furniture and automobile upholstery, wall coverings, housewares, and automobile parts.1,2-Dichloroethane is also used generally as an intermediate for other organic chemical compounds and as a solvent. It forms azeotropes with many other solvents, including water (b.p.70.5°C) and other chlorocarbons.

Character

Colorless transparent oily liquid, sweet, volatile, heavy. Can be miscible with ethanol, chloroform and ether, soluble in about 120 parts of water. Relative density (D204)1.2569, freezing point -40℃, boiling point 83-84 ℃, refractive index (n20D)1.4443, flash point (closed cup) 13℃, flammable, highly toxic (1, 1-dichloroethane is a micro toxic), half lethal dose (rats, via mouth) 670mg/kg. Cancer risk. Steam irritates the respiratory tract.

Application

1. Mainly used for vinyl chloride; Ethylene glycol; Oxalic acid; Ethylenediamine. Tetraethyl lead; Polyvinyl polyamines and bibenzoyl raw materials. Also used as a grease; Resin; Rubber solvent, dry lotion, pesticide except inulin; Caffeine; Vitamin; Hormone extractants, wetting agents, wetting agents, petroleum dewaxing, aseismic agents, also used in the manufacture of pesticides and insecticides; Piperazine's raw material. Used for food in agriculture; Fumigants for grains; Soil disinfectant, etc.

2. Used for boron analysis, oil and tobacco extraction agent. It is also used in the manufacture of acetylcellulose.

3. Used as analytical reagent, such as solvent and chromatographic standard substance. It is also used in oil extraction and organic synthesis.
4. Detergent, extractant, pesticide and metal degreasing agent.

5. Used as a solvent for wax, fat, rubber, etc., and as a cereal insecticide.
