Description
Nicotinamide is a water-soluble form of vitamin B3 or niacin. It is available to humans through everyday foods such as fish, poultry, nuts, legumes, eggs and grains. Nicotinamide supplements are used to treat skin conditions and niacin deficiency.
uses
Nicotinamide has been approved by the FDA for the prevention and treatment of pellagra. It also prevents some forms of skin lesions in patients with sun-damaged skin.
side effects
Nicotinamide is well tolerated in most cases. Foods or supplements containing nicotinamide are safe when taken in doses less than 35 mg per day. Nicotinamide may also be safe in doses up to 900-1500 mg per day. Overdose may be associated with nausea, vomiting, headache, fatigue, dizziness, hepatotoxicity and increased risk of low platelets.
